The Church Year
Christians ‘tell the time’ differently from the normal calendar, because the seasons of the church year tell and retell the story of Jesus. Seasons are governed by the story rather than the weather, and this gives a cycle of preparation, celebration and learning. Our worship changes according to the season, and different colours and symbols are used to reflect the theme of each season.
The main seasons of the church year are listed below; some of them have other special days within them. Use these links to find out more about the seasons of the church year.
Holy Week (including Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday)
The time between Pentecost and Advent, and (when it occurs) the time between Epiphany and Lent are called ‘Ordinary Time’.
Saints’ Days can occur at any time of the year.
Saint Bartholomew’s Day is on 24th August and All Saints’ Day is 1st November.
