Advent
The church year begins on Advent Sunday, four Sundays before Christmas. Advent means ‘the coming’ and so we prepare for the coming of Jesus. We hear and read the words of the Old Testament prophets who foretold the birth of Jesus, and try to prepare ourselves to receive Jesus into our hearts and our lives. While everyone around is celebrating Christmas from the start of December, we concentrate on the ‘waiting’ and our longing for Jesus to come, not only as a reminder of His first coming 2000 years ago, but also in readiness for His second coming in the future.
The colour purple is used in Advent.
