The Church Year

Lent > >

Epiphany

On 6th January each year the church hears the story of the Wise Men who travelled from far off to visit the baby in Bethlehem. They were led by a star to a place where a king had been born, but it was a dirty stable rather than a royal palace. Still, they recognised Jesus as their king, and they brought fine gifts and worshipped Him.

‘Epiphany’ means ‘the showing’ or ‘revealing’ and it tells of the moment when Jesus’ true identity was recognised. Epiphany concludes the whole cycle of stories begun at the start of Advent and about the birth of Jesus, which is called the incarnation, as God takes on our human form.

The Christmas colours Gold and white are still used.
